Students must have a 2020-2021 aid year FAFSA on file with Danville Community College in order to be reviewed for summer 2021 financial aid eligibility. Summer Pell Grant awards depend upon an individual student’s Pell grant usage in the fall 2020 and spring 2021 semesters.
Summer awards of State Aid depend upon state funding availability, which may be limited. Complete the 2021 Summer Application to apply for the state funds.
Eligible students will receive a financial aid award notification sent to the Message Center within the MyDCC Student Center once awarded.
Summer Pell Grant Eligibility (students with full-time enrollment status for the current fall and spring semesters)
- A student who used all of his/her full Pell Grant award for the current fall and spring semesters may be eligible for an additional Pell Grant Award for the upcoming summer semester.
- To receive an additional Pell Grant Award for the summer semester, an eligible student must maintain enrollment in at least 6 credits.
- A student who receives an additional summer Pell Grant under this rule and who does not maintain enrollment in at least 6 credits, will lose the full amount of the award and likely will have to repay the college.
- If eligible, the DCC Financial Aid Office will award your eligible summer amount based on full-time enrollment.
- Check Anticipated Aid in Account Inquiry on the Student Services Page in SIS to see how your enrollment status affects your summer award.
Summer Pell Grant Eligibility (students with part-time enrollment status for the current fall and/or spring semesters)
- A student who used part of his/her Pell Grant for the current fall and/or spring semester(s) may have remaining Pell Grant eligibility for the upcoming summer semester.
- Additionally, a student in this situation may be eligible for an additional Pell Grant award if a student is enrolled in 6 or more credits.
- If eligible, the DCC Financial Aid Office will award your eligible summer amount based on full-time enrollment.
- Check Anticipated Aid in Account Inquiry on the Student Services Page in SIS to see how your enrollment status will affect your summer award.
State Grant Funds Eligibility
Students that fall into the categories below may be eligible for state grant funds in the summer. These are general categories and do not guarantee state aid eligibility. Students outside of these categories may or may not demonstrate eligibility. Once students have registered for summer courses, if they have a completed 2020-2021 FAFSA on file and meet Satisfactory Academic Progress standards, their account will be reviewed for additional state funds. Eligible students will receive a financial aid award notification sent to the Message Center within the MyDCC Student Center once awarded.
- A student who was not eligible for a Pell Grant during the current academic year fall and spring semesters, but received state aid in either semester.
- A new student that is beginning in the summer that has no or low Pell grant eligibility.
- A student that was Pell Grant eligible in the current academic year fall and spring semesters, but was not full time both semesters.
Additional Information for State Aid:
- State aid is awarded to students with ‘In State’ residency status.
- Virginia Commonwealth Grant (COMA) awards assist with covering tuition and fees for at least six financial aid eligible credits of enrollment.
- Books, supplies, and additional courses may need to be paid by the student out-of-pocket or using other sources.
- If you have been awarded COMA funds and you do not register for and maintain enrollment in 6 or more credits towards your program at DCC, your award will be cancelled, and you will have to pay out of pocket for any remaining credits.
- There are limited state funds available to students that will be attending less than 6 credits, and those will be awarded to students based on registered credits.
Direct and PLUS Loan Eligibility
A student who wishes to request a Direct Student Loan for the summer semester must complete and submit the Direct Student Loan Request Form to the Financial Aid Office. First-time Direct Student Loan borrowers need to complete the required Master Promissory Note and Entrance Counseling at studentloans.gov.
Important Dates for Summer 2021
April 1
First day to enroll in summer 2020 classes
May 10
First day to charge books with Financial Aid. When using Financial Aid to purchase books, please purchase all required textbooks up-front, including books for second session classes, do not wait until classes start.
May 24
First day of the 10-week class session and first 5-week class session.
June 15
Your awards will be cancelled if you have not registered for any class(es), including the second 5-week summer session. PELL eligible students that register after this date for second session classes will need to contact the Financial Aid Office to reinstate the award. State grants will not be available after this date.
June 29
First day of the second 5-week class session.
After your financial aid eligibility has been determined, you can view your award by logging in to your MyDCC account. If your financial aid award is not sufficient to cover your tuition and fees, you will need to make a payment online via your MyDCC account.
If you are going to attend 6 or more financial aid eligible credits in the summer, you may wish to submit a Direct Loan Request Form if the grant funds that you have been awarded are not sufficient. It is recommended that your Federal Direct Stafford loan request be submitted by May 15, in order to have the anticipated loan apply toward your tuition charges.
Please Note:
- Students who have borrowed the maximum annual loan limits during fall and spring semesters will have no remaining loan eligibility for summer semester.
- Remember all awards are contingent upon your continued compliance with the institution's Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP) standards. If you are awarded financial aid in the summer, but fail to meet the college’s SAP standards after the current spring semester, your financial aid award for summer will be cancelled.
