Danville Community College (DCC) is broadening the scope of classes offered by joining the state-wide Shared Services Distance Learning (SSDL) Program, headed up by the Virginia Community Colleges System (VCCS). This program allows DCC to share courses with other Virginia community colleges so that DCC students are provided a broader selection of courses, delivered online.

“Our number one priority is to provide our students with access to the higher education opportunities that they wish to pursue, right here in their hometown,” said Jacqueline Gill Powell, president of Danville Community College. “By bringing courses from around the state that we wouldn’t otherwise offer, like anthropology, oceanography, and social media marketing, we are effectively widening their path to success, and broadening the scope of available learning. We are thrilled to be able to offer this program to our students.”

In turn, DCC will provide courses to other Virginia community colleges that they might not otherwise be able to offer.

“We offer a number of unique courses here at DCC that are not available at other community colleges,” said Justin Nichols, SSDL Liaison for Danville Community College. “Courses like Social Ethics and Intermediate Spanish will be offered through DCC to students across the Commonwealth of Virginia. It is truly a win-win for all community colleges involved.”

Nichols, who serves as the main point-of-contact regarding SSDL, notes that all SSDL courses are conducted asynchronously online, so that students may access the curriculum from anywhere, at any time. Questions about the program as it relates to DCC should be directed to Nichols at ssdl@danville.edu
