(February 16, 2017)  – Danville Community College hosted a poetry slam with Hillsborough, N.C., Poet Laureate William “Endlesswill” Davis to celebrate Black History Month on Thursday, Feb. 16, in Foundation Hall Commons. The event was hailed by attendees as moving and uplifting.

African-American Culture Club advisors Kyesha Jennings and Alice Saunders helped coordinate the event.

Endlesswill, a spoken word poet, is known for the depth and emotion he puts into his poetry. The poetry slam included DCC faculty, staff, and students, as well as guests from the community.

Jennings said featuring Endlesswill in this year’s Black History Month festivities was not a question of if, but when.

“He performed at an open mic in Durham, N.C., and at the end of his performance I was completely blown away,” Jennings explained. “I ran up to him immediately almost stalkerish-like: ‘Hey, I want to bring you to my school!’ He was our hidden poetry gem for Black History Month.”

The common area in Foundation Hall was filled to capacity. The audience was very intrigued and engaged by the poetry readings. Several students shared their poetry pieces with confidence and poise and performed like it was a master poetry slam and they were destined to perform poetry.

Jennings and Walker said that they hope to get more students and community members involved in upcoming events. For more information about DCC’s African-American Culture Club, contact Professor Jennings at 434-797-8549 or kjennings@dcc.vccs.edu.
