Students to perform Shakespeare at Danville Community College

(October 18, 2016)  – Danville Community College will present a production of Shakespeare’s Pericles, Prince of Tyre  on Tuesday, October 25, from 10 a.m. to noon, in Oliver Hall, Room 109, Temple Building. The play has been the subject of study for CST 136, Theatre Production, under the direction of Professor Janina Shoemaker.

Worldwide attention has been paid to William Shakespeare and his death 400 years ago, which has sparked anniversary productions, including at Danville Community College.  Although the comedy is filled with melodramatic scenes of tempests and ship wrecks, at the conclusion, the principal characters are reunited and all is well, the evildoers are punished, and the nobles are returned to their respective kingdoms.

Pericles has a skimpy, but exciting, plot line with the prince coming of age, courting danger in his search for a bride, and surviving — not one — but two ship wrecks. He loses his love in a severe storm, leaving him bereft at fostering his baby daughter to a foreign governor.

When he later learns that his daughter has died, he pines away on a sea voyage, until the goddess Diana visits him in a dream, bringing him cheering news.

The 12 students of CST 136 portray 18 different characters, plus another dozen “extras,” and also fulfill all backstage crew positions as part of their study of Elizabethan theatre. The production is open to the public, admission is free, and theatre and literature students are encouraged to attend.
