DCC Knights Baseball Team earns rings for region championship

(November 22, 2016)  – The 2016 Danville Community College Knights Baseball Team was recognized on Monday, November 21, for winning the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Region X, Division III championship in the spring. The Knights received their championship rings during a ceremony in Foundation Hall, marking the fifth conference championship the team has won during its 14-year history.

The 26-player 2016 team, Head Coach John Bailey, Assistant Coach Joey Lind, and Assistant Coach Danny Johnson received rings, while JoLane Tilley, athletic director, and Nancy Reynolds, baseball advisor, each received matching commemorative pendants for their work in ensuring the team’s success on the field and in the classroom.

“This year marks the fifth conference championship the Knights have won,” Tilley said. “The first 10 years, we were in the Virginia Community College System (VCCS) conference, won four of those years, and placed runner up for six. Since 2011, we have been in the NJCAA Region X, Division III conference.”

Guest speakers at the event included Danville City Councilman and DCC alumnus Lee Vogler. Vogler played on DCC’s 2006 and 2007 championship teams before he graduated from DCC, continued his studies at Virginia Commonwealth University, and returned to Danville to become the youngest elected official in the city’s recorded history at age 24 in 2012. During the ceremony, Vogler commended the team for their achievement and remarked on the importance of athletics in the collegiate experience.

“It’s a great time in their lives. You realize you make friendships that will carry on for a long time. I believe you learn lessons that apply in life when you’re out on the ballfield,” Vogler said. “For me, I’m on a team of nine now on city council, so I brought a lot of experience doing that in baseball. I think that these guys, especially 10, 15, or 20 years from now, will look back on this as a fantastic period in their lives.”

H.F. Haymore, DCC Educational Foundation board member and part of the baseball team’s founding committee in 2001, presented the rings to each player on Monday. Haymore commented on how the team’s commitment to excellence led to victory in the 2016 season and said they should all feel proud of what they have accomplished. Haymore was instrumental in organizing the team’s inaugural season.

Bailey advised the 2017 team to take a look at the rings and former players and focus on the upcoming season which, he said, he hopes will bring a sixth championship win to the Knights’ record.

The next season kicks off with the Knights’ first 2017 game scheduled for February 10.
