Lady Knights donate winter clothes to Boys and Girls Club

(December 21, 2016)  – Danville Community College’s Lady Knights Volleyball Team donated winter clothes for more than 150 children to the Boys and Girls Clubs of the Danville Area (BGCDA) this week.

The donation, funded by DCC’s Educational Foundation, was given ahead of BGCDA’s annual holiday party.

“These gifts from the DCC Lady Knights will help keep our kids warm this winter,” said Faith Stamps, BGCDA executive director.

Stocking caps, scarves, and gloves were purchased and assembled into beautiful gifts for the children at BGCDA — ranging from five to 18 years of age.

It was challenging to find scarves small enough for the younger children, so DCC Vice President of Institutional Advancement and Development Shannon Hair, Cheryl Hill, DCC Foundation administrative and office specialist, and Jernaya Coleman, volleyball head coach, made scarves out of fleece material.

For DCC staff, the rewards for contributing to this project were the knowledge that the gifts would impact the lives of so many children at BGCDA and the example they were setting for the Lady Knights — that community service and philanthropy are important elements of being well-rounded, responsible, and productive citizens.

“The DCC Educational Foundation is proud to support this community service effort by the Lady Knights Volleyball Team,” Hair said. “The Foundation is excited to have Dr. Coleman as the new volleyball coach and we look forward to partnering with the team in future community service efforts in the upcoming season. I hope the children of the Boys and Girls Club enjoy the gifts provided.”

Stamps said BGCDA is happy to accept help from the community.

“BGCDA can always use volunteers and mentors,” Stamps said. “We provide a safe place for the kids in our community to go every day after school. Investments can be made online at www.bgcdanville.org.”
